Tips for Managing Two Kids Under Two: A Personal Guide

As a mum of two little ones under the age of two (2 under 2, I know!) I understand firsthand how challenging and rewarding this journey can be. Balancing the needs of a toddler and a newborn requires patience, strategy, and a sense of humour. Here are my top five tips for surviving and thriving with two kids under two.

1. Create a Routine and Stick to It

Having a consistent routine is crucial when you have two small children. It helps create a sense of security and predictability for both kids. Here’s what worked for us:

  • Morning Routine: Start the day with breakfast, followed by a set time for play, naps, and feeding. This helps manage the chaos and keeps everyone on track.
  • Nap Time: Syncing naps can be a game-changer. If both kids nap at the same time - bonus! You get a much-needed break to recharge or catch up on chores.
  • Evening Routine: Establish a calming bedtime routine with bath time, storytime, and lullabies. This can help your older child wind down and prepare for sleep, making it easier to manage the newborn’s needs.

2. Prepare and Plan Ahead

Preparation is key to managing two under two. Being organised can save a lot of stress:

  • Meal Prep: Cook and freeze meals in advance or prep oven dishes to save time. This way, you’re not scrambling to make dinner while juggling the kids.
  • Nappy Bag Essentials: Keep a well-stocked nappy bag ready at all times with nappies, wipes, extra clothes, snacks, and bottles. It makes outings and emergencies much more manageable.
  • Clothing: Lay out clothes for both kids the night before to streamline the morning rush.

3. Embrace Babywearing

Babywearing has been a lifesaver for me. It allows you to keep your newborn close while freeing up your hands to care for your toddler:

  • Comfort and Convenience: Use a baby carrier or wrap to keep the baby close and comfortable. It’s especially useful during outings or when your older child needs attention.
  • Bonding Time: It also promotes bonding with your newborn while keeping them soothed and secure.
  • Multitasking: You can feed the baby, cook, and play with your toddler simultaneously.

4. Encourage Sibling Bonding

Fostering a positive relationship between your children from the start can make a big difference:

  • Involve Your Toddler: Include your toddler in baby care activities like fetching nappies or singing to the baby. It helps them feel important and reduces jealousy.
  • Special Time: Spend one-on-one time with your toddler to reassure them they’re still loved and valued. Even a few minutes of focused attention can make a huge difference.
  • Play Together: Encourage safe and gentle interactions between the kids. Let your toddler show toys or ‘read’ to the baby.

5. Ask for Help and Accept It

Don’t be afraid to ask for help or accept it when offered. You’re not alone, and it takes a village to raise children:

  • Family and Friends: Reach out to family members and friends for support. Whether it’s babysitting, cooking a meal, or just being there to talk, every bit helps.
  • Professional Help: If possible, consider hiring a babysitter or a cleaner to ease your workload.
  • Self-Care: Remember to take care of yourself too. Schedule some ‘me time’ to recharge, even if it’s just a short walk or a quiet cup of tea.

Having two kids under two is undoubtedly challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. By creating a routine, planning ahead, embracing babywearing, encouraging sibling bonding, and accepting help, you can manage the chaos and enjoy the precious moments with your little ones. Remember, you’re doing an amazing job, and it’s okay to ask for help when you need it. Happy parenting!
